My Story

Hi! My name is Jillien A. Shaw.  I am a Mental Health Counselor at Roots & Resilience Wellness, working with children, teens, and adults on an array of mental health conditions. I believe that one of the key components of therapy is the relationship between the therapist and the client.  Together the therapist and client create an atmosphere that is conducive for exploration, personal growth and insight.  Before I became a therapist, I obtained a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, and Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership from Mercy College.  My professional career has been diverse, but one commonality has been connecting with individuals; individuals  in crisis;  individuals ready to learn, and individuals that at times require assistance to navigate the complexities of life.  I have worked as a Police Officer in Westchester County, a therapist for at risk youth, as well as a substitute teacher.

While working as an Administrator on Duty at a Juvenile Detention Center for the State of New York, I found that many lacked emotional intelligence.   In addition, self-awareness, empathy, self-regulation and social skills were also lacking in many of the youth I met there. When I decided to become a therapist, I envisioned a different approach.  I believe Mental health treatment should not only be a response to trauma, but also part of consistent maintenance of an individual’s overall mental health.   Just like when we go to the gym for physical conditioning, or going to your primary care physician for a checkup, we should take the necessary steps to ensure our mental fortitude, “preventive medicine.”

While earning my Masters, I interned at St. Vincent Hospital in Harrison, NY.  This is where I was able to connect with individuals not only suffering with their mental health, but also substance abuse. The combination of academics, professional experience and life lessons, I believe makes me well suited to provide the necessary navigational skills to aid clients on their road towards a healthy lifestyle.  I look forward to working with you in the future. I am trained in the following evidence-based treatment modalities:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

  • Solution Focused Therapy

  • Trauma-Focused Therapy

  • Motivational Interviewing

  • Person-Centered Therapy
